Sinterklaas (also known as Santa Claus) is a mythological figure who is an important figure in Dutch culture and tradition. It is mainly celebrated in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and in some regions of Germany, France and Poland.
Sinterklaas is a character similar to Santa Claus, but has slightly different characteristics. According to tradition, Sinterklaas arrives in the towns and villages of the Netherlands every year on December 5, just before St. Nicholas' Day (Dutch: Sinterklaas Dag). He is said to travel on a white horse named Amerigo.
Like Santa Claus, Sinterklaas is considered a good-natured character who gives gifts to children. Traditionally, children put their shoes or socks in front of the fireplace or door, and Sinterklaas leaves presents or sweets in them at night. Parades featuring Sinterklaas are also held in many cities, where children can see him in person and give him their greetings letters.
