Atlas XXL spherical astrolabe
The spherical astrolabe, or armillary sphere, is a historical astronomical instrument used from ancient times until the 16th century, when it was supplanted by more accurate instruments. Astrolabes were used, among others, to determine the position of celestial bodies above the horizon and to determine their own position. The astrolabe symbolizes the scientific ambitions and aspirations of mankind to explore the universe. On Atlas's shoulders rests the celestial vault, in this case the armillary sphere, the center of which is the Earth. The globe is surrounded by rings representing the north and south poles, the equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the zodiacal ring (ecliptic). The latter represents the annual path of the Sun through the zodiacal constellations. The horizontal, stationary rim represents the visible horizon, and the vertical rim represents the meridian.
