Brass Map Reader compass
The Map Reader brass compass in a wooden box is a replica of a device by the British company Spencer & Co. from 1905 On the one hand, it is a compass, and on the other, a magnifying glass - the device was used to read map details. At the edge, an inscription in English: "A thousand mile journey begins with a single step" - "A thousand mile journey begins with the first step".
How to use the compass?
Place the compass on an even surface, for example on a map lying on a table. It has a safety system that immobilizes the needle. After releasing this lock with a screw, the compass starts working. After a while of work, the amplitude of the needle deflections will decrease, and finally the direction is stabilized. The compass should be placed in such a way that the red arrow is aligned with the north. After it stabilizes, the needle may tremble slightly. Map readers are accurate compasses, they are used to precisely determine the azimuth of a journey or route. On the inside of the compass, there is a precise angular scale in the range of 0 - 360 degrees that allows you to determine the azimuth, i.e. the angle between the North and the desired place selected on the map. Apart from finishing the work, the needle should be blocked.
